A well deserving Rimbey senior has been nominated for this year’s Minister’s Seniors Service Award.
Gladys Johnson is one of the 81 seniors nominated for the award, which will be presented this fall in Edmonton.
Johnson was nominated by the Rimbey Drop-In Centre.
Drop-In centre president Doreen Glanfield said Johnson is an amazing, hard working volunteer who de- serves to be recognized. Her willingness to help out whenever and wherever she can and walk the extra mile is well known by many community groups.
“She’s the one that always says ‘yes, I’ll do that.’ She says yes to everything and she does it,” said Glanfield.
She said Johnson was a tireless volunteer when the new Drop In was built.
“She became my partner in getting the new Drop In built. She was the treasurer and we formed a catering group. She has worked so hard for the Drop In.
Johnson was also a charter member of the Wooddale Ladies Club and is still part of the group. She served as president of the Rimbey & District old Timers’ Association for several years, stepping back this year as president, but still remaining a vital and important part of the committee. This organization, too, is very dear to her heart and she derives a great deal of satisfaction in helping to bring friends and neighbours together again each year.
Johnson is humbled and proud to have been nominated for the award.
“It’s overwhelming, really,” she said.
She was especially pleased that her children Les Johnson, Bev Bohlender and Val Dolan and her granddaughter and great grandson Chelsea and Dolan Chomistek were in attendance at a special tea held for the nominees in Calgary.
“It was very nice. I was so pleased to have them there,” she said.
Johnson farmed with her late husband, Herb southeast of Rimbey by the Parkland Beach Road for 42 years. Her husband passed away in 1993 and Gladys moved to town about 10 years ago. She has six grandchildren and two great grandsons.
Her son has taken over the farm, but Gladys still has a vegetable garden on the home place.

In an article ‘Rimbey seniors nominated for provincial service awards’ in the June 9 edition of the Review, the fact Gladys Johnson was a char- ter member of the Rimbey Hospital Auxiliary was omitted. She was not a charter member of the Wooddale ladies Club, but has been a member of the club for 60 years.
