A fire advisory is in effect for all of Ponoka County.

Ponoka County Regional Fire Services issued the advisory Thursday afternoon stating this includes the towns of Ponoka and Rimbey, plus the Summer Village of Parkland Beach.

“Due to continued dry windy conditions, and warming temperatures in the forecast, the regional fire services will not be authorizing any new fire permits until further notice,” states a release.

Previously issued fire permits are allowed to expire and burning barrels with screens are still allowed. Plus, cooking or warming fires — in approved fire pits —are also allowed, states the county.

“However, please use with extreme caution. This advisory will remain in effect until adequate moisture is received or conditions necessitate the need for a fire ban.”

Both the west and east district fire departments have started dealing with grass fires, some more serious than others, which shows just how dry the conditions are.

Ponoka County Regional Fire Services advises residents use extreme caution if using fire pits, burn barrels or conducting open burning.

“Be aware of the weather conditions at all times while burning. Always extinguish your fire if the change in weather increases the hazard of your fire,” states the county release.
