A shooting in the quiet rural countryside near Rimbey has claimed the life of a local senior.

Rimbey RCMP Sgt. Mark Groves confirmed Paul Michanuik, 70, was killed by a single gunshot wound to the torso. A Calgary medical examiner determined the death to be a homicide.

Michaniuk was found dead at around 6.15 p.m. on March 19 on Medicine Lake Road, a few kilometres northwest o Rimbey.”

“A local farmer called 9-1-1,” said Groves.

Red Deer RCMP’s Major Crimes unit investigated the fatality and discovered a male suspect who was later found dead at a residence in the Rimbey area.

Groves said the two men knew each other.

“They had historical connections and had been closes associates,” said Groves.

He said the name of the suspect is not being released.

While the tragedy leaves the rural community shocked and saddened, Groves said he is gratified with the way the neighbours stepped up to the plate when they learned of the incident.

“This was a local area farmer and neighbours stepped right up to help look after the cattle.”

He said Range Road 34 was closed for a couple of days due to investigations and he is thankful for the help the RCMP received.
