Mr. Arthur “Art” Reuben Schmidt of Rimbey, Alberta went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 2, 2007. He passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey after a lengthy illness. Art celebrated his 80th birthday on April 19, 2007.

Art was born in Rockyford, Alberta and grew up on a farm in the Elnora area. He later became an automotive and heavy duty mechanic, working in Red Deer, Innisfail and Winfield. Art took early retirement at the age of 62 years, and was employed part-time at the West Pine Senior’s Lodge in Winfield for three years. Then, at the age of 65 years he retired permanently, but still remained active mowing his lawn and doing mechanical work for friends. Art loved spending time with his family and friends, and he especially enjoyed hunting with this grandsons. He also enjoyed southern gospel music, and the annual concert held in Red Deer was a priority on his time schedule every summer, spending it with his wife, his granddaughter, Lindsey, and sometimes other family members.

and friend... and he will be greatly missed.”

Art will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Norma, spending 58 happy years together; and by three precious children, Brian (Gerrie) Schmidt of Sherwood Park, Alberta; Diane (Brian) Wheale and their four sons, Kevin, Dennis, Jason and Christopher, all of Rimbey; and Linda (Allan) Wheale and their four children, Lindsey (Blaize) Clark, Rebekah, Abigail and Abraham, all of Spiritwood, Saskatchewan. He will also be lovingly remembered by his sister, Edith Anderson who resides in the Country Lodge Senior’s Home in Innisfail; one very special nephew, Kent Schmidt and his wife, Bonnie and their two children, all of Elnora; one very special niece, Tammy (Schmidt) Freitag and her husband, Evart of Rimbey; as well as many other special nieces and nephews. Art was predeceased by his father and mother, David and Lydia Schmidt; four brothers and one sister.

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Art’s Life was held at the Rimbey Church of the Nazarene, Rimbey on Friday, August 10, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Dave MacMillan officiating. Cremation took place in Red Deer, Alberta. A Family Interment will take place at a later date in the Arthurvale Cemetery near Elnora, which is close to the home district where Art grew up.
