Tax increase higher than 1.5 per cent

It would be nice to have a little more honesty and a little less deception from our politicians.

Dear Editor,

Re: Article in March 18, 2014 Rimbey Review titled Taxes to go up by 1.5 per cent.

It would be nice to have a little more honesty and a little less deception from our politicians.

Upon closer examination of the budget draft, you will note it is the mill rate that has gone up 1.5 per cent, not the taxes. Pankiw stated that the average assessment went up by approximately four per cent. You don’t have to be a mathematical genius to figure out that a 1.5 per cent increase in the mill rate plus a four per cent increase in assessment does not add up to a 1.5 per cent tax increase.

Let’s be real. The actual average tax increase is closer to four per cent.
