A young tie down roper who has plans to go on to university was this year’s recipient of the Barry Edge Scholarship presented last Saturday at the Rimbey Rodeo banquet and cabaret.

Nineteen-year-old Colten Foster from Drayton Valley received the $500 scholarship from the Edge family.

Foster said later he was very happy to receive the award.

“I was actually surprised and proud to have the scholarship. I am also a tie down roper and I practice a lot with Dean Edge before I start going to summer rodeos. Dean has always supported me and coached me.”

Foster, who very much enjoys the sport of tie down roping, took third at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Rock Springs, Wyoming this year.

His future plans are to train to be a farrier at the University of Arizona and continue his education at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology the next fall where he may study petroleum technology.

He is grateful for the support and encouragement from the Edge family.

“I want to say thank you to the Edge family for what they have done for me and thanks to Dean Edge for coaching me at his father’s arena.”

Every year the Edge family awards the scholarship to a recipient who enjoys roping and is going to attend post-secondary education.

Tim Edge said Colten is most deserving of the award.

“He’s definitely a go-getter. He has accomplished a lot and we are all proud of him.”
