After school, summer fun offered

TREENA MIELKE/Rimbey Review

A serious jolt of enthusiasm has been injected into several recreation programs in Rimbey and, consequently, there’s lots of action happening in the coming months.

“All we need is people,” said Peter Stenstrom, community services co-coordinator. “I’m taking a shot in the dark here, the programs are being made available, but we need the people to show up to make them work.”

In response to ongoing requests from the public, an after school program is now underway and will run until June 24.

The program, which operates from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. is packed full of fun activities for the children such as soccer, flag football, Ultimate Frisbee, rugby, ball hockey and rollerblading. Other activities are to include capture the flag, dodgeball, Frisbee golf, cricket, baseball, Chinese kickball, tennis baseball, dance, relay races, laughing yoga and boxing.

The children will participate in these activities at the Rimbey Christian School outdoor field, the community centre parking lot, the ball diamonds or the community centre.

Rainy days activities will be held at the community centre.

To take part in the program, a nominal fee is required and participants simply need to show up at the community centre after school.

Kayla Hoffer, a recent graduate of the University of Alberta who has her degree in education, will run the after school program.

Hoffer will also be in charge of the summer programs which will run during July and August from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

These activities will include day trips, horseback riding, a day at the beach, a trip to Gone Green Farms, a hay ride, swimming, a bug hunt, summer art, face painting and much more.

Hoffer is looking forward to getting to know the children and spending time with them helping them participate in lots of fun activities.

“I enjoy working with kids and find it especially fun to do physical activities with them,” she said.

Stenstrom has also developed program for teenagers and adults who want to stay active and have some fun.

“Physical activity has added a lot of value to my life,” he said. “It’s good for people to be active to stay fit and two be involved.”

For the older teens and the young at heart Ultimate Frisbee will be held Mondays at the BMX/Rimoka Park (behind the Alliance Church) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This program will run from May 30 to Aug. 29.

Floor hockey will be held at the Rimbey arena from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Participants need to bring their own stick and goalie equipment. The program will run from June 1 to Aug. 31.

Wallyball has begun at the Rimbey Community Center and will run to September 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

And to provide an opportunity for families to play together, soccer will be held Sundays at the BMX/Rimoka Park from 2 to 4 p.m. This program will run from May 29 to Aug. 28.

Stenstrom is always open to ideas and suggestions regarding recreation in Rimbey.

“My door is always open,” he said.
