TREENA MIELKE/Rimbey Review

A young entrepreneur from the Rimbey area is using her training and skill to provide several safety courses, which could, in a crisis situation, be the determining life-saving factor in a crisis situation.

Melissa Norem, a certified Canadian Safety Council instructor for ATV (all-terrain vehicles) and UTV (utility-terrain vehicles) and a Red Cross first aid instructor is offering several courses to meet the safety needs of people from all walks of life.

The 27-year-old Rimbey-area resident has been teaching courses throughout Alberta and in the Northwest Territories for seven years.

She enjoys teaching others about safety, noting that courses are beneficial for workers who require certification for employment and also the recreational ATV rider.

“The course is designed to train riders in safe and efficient use of an all terrain vehicle. Plan to spend little time in the classroom and most of the day outside riding ATVs,” she said.

During the ATV course, Norem teaches safe riding practices such as wearing proper gear and equipment, how to ride on hills and over obstacles such as logs and trees, and the proper procedures for loading and unloading.

“A lot of accidents occur while loading and unloading,” she said. “The main thing is to use the right ramps and make sure the ramps are always tied down.”

Norem also teaches one- and two-day Red Cross First Aid Courses. The one-day emergency course includes training on the immediate care for life-threatening conditions including the airway, breathing and circulation emergencies. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator certification are included in the course.

The two-day course also includes how to deal with bone, muscle and joint injury, wound care and medical conditions (diabetic emergencies, seizure and environmental emergencies).

Norem also teaches half-day workplace hazardous materials information system WHMIS and transportation of dangerous goods courses, flag person training, bear awareness, Enform chainsaw and trailer towing.
