Bentley Community News: Teacher changes at Bentley schools

Bentley school students will see both new and returning teachers when they return to classes on Sept. 2.

The new school principal taking the reins is Mr. Lane Moore. Mr. Ian McLaren enters his second year as vice- principal at Bentley.

Preliminary projected enrollment numbers of 340-350 are about the same as last year indicated Moore, with single classes in all grades, except two for Grade 7.

ECS teacher remains Mrs. Denise Henry. Elementary teaching staff remain virtually the same - Mrs. Myrna Robinson (Gr. 1), Mrs. Joanne Simpson (Gr. 2), Mrs. Jane Moore (Gr. 3), Miss Karen Patching (Gr. 4), Mrs. Joann Griffin (Gr. 5), Mr. Ian McLaren (Gr. 6), Mr. Dale Yost (music plus other), and Mrs. Joan Gammie and Mrs. Pat Wiggins (Resource / Special Ed.).

In the Jr./Sr. High School, the teaching staff has undergone many changes. New to the school are Mrs. Rebecca Krauss, Ms. Karen Weisgerber, and Mr. Mark Richter.

Returning from maternity leave is Mrs. Brenda von Kuster, and moving from teaching the Grade 6s last year to teaching the Grade 7s this year is Mrs. Lindsay Morrison.

Returning are Mr. Gord Graves, Mr. Jason Hazlett, Ms. Connie Swarbrick, Ms. Christine Wu who was new last year, and also Mr. Merv Leidl who is teaching the CTS courses.

Mr. Lothar Kemski, Mr. Mark Porter, Mr. Matt Dickinson, Mr. Joe Thibeau, Ms. Melanie Ryan, Ms. Erin Garnier, and Mrs. Jana Setters have moved on.

Principal Moore indicated he wants to “feel out the culture of the school and get to know the students and families” before making changes to see what has been working will remain and not be changed, he said. He vows to keep the good and build and enhance it.

On Sept. 19 there will be a Jr./Sr. High awards ceremony acknowledging the accomplishments earned by students last term. It will be in the afternoon in the high school gym and is open to the public. Also, the school’s annual Pancake Breakfast/Turkey Trot /Terry Fox Run will continue and is scheduled for October 3.

Watch for an announcement about the first meeting of the Parent Council where parents have a chance to give input and feedback and help support the school programs.

Classes changed for Bentley fair crafts and hobbies

There were 170 entries, a good number, but down from the 230 last year, in the Crafts, Hobbies, and Amateur Photography section of the Bentley Fair bench exhibits this year, with the largest majority being in the photography classes.

Organizers were disappointed that eight different classes had no entries at all and are hoping more people and families will take the time to enter their beautiful creations for all to see and enjoy next year.

Some classes will be deleted and some added for next year including Quilting, Paint by Number, Leather Craft including leather braiding, Felt Foam Craft, Rock Painting, and Butterflies, Insects, and Reptiles will be added to photography classes.

Some special sponsored awards were given out this past show, over and above the regular ribbons and cash prizes per class.

The Bentley Agricultural Society cash awards for the Most Overall Points in the junior boys and Megan Ostrikoff and Thomas Mueller won junior girls categories.

The Judge’s Choice Best of Show rosette went to Marg Martin for her photo of a winter sunset.

Judged the Most Outstanding Juvenile Exhibit, donated by Dave and Pat Carlyle, was Alyssa Wilson who had many entries besides her winning current year’s 4-H project book.

The best photo of a storm was won by Cameron Kozak and sponsored by Joan Dickau.

The best scrap-booking page sponsored Leslie Garries of Creative Memories, was won by Marg Martin with a page comprised of her daughter and granddaughter.

Sheila Budd was again the Crafts, Hobbies, and Amateur Photography judge.

Helen Wasik, Janice Shaw, Sandi Meredith and the Doll family assisted convener Joan Dickau.

Dickau says be sure to check the program for the changes next year, and feel free to call her at 403-748-4001 if there is any doubt at all about what can be entered or how to go about it.

Planning for entries for next year can start now!
