Big weekend set for Rimbey

Organizers are gearing up for what could be the busiest weekend of the summer in Rimbey.

Organizers are gearing up for what could be the busiest weekend of the summer in Rimbey.

“Between the Main Street Shootout, Art in the Park, the two-day Farmers’ Market, the Show ‘n’ Shine, it should be one of our main events, if not the main event of the year,” says Art in the Park organizer Dave Karroll.

While the Shootout and Show ‘n’ Shine have been running successfully for a few years, Karroll is hoping Art in the Park will establish itself as a top event in its inaugural running.

“Response has been reasonable for a first-time event. Certainly we’re planning on it being a long-term event and I think we’ve got a real shot at building a good event and venue for artists to get exposure to the public.”

Invitations have been sent out to various art clubs and individuals to notify them of the big two-day event that will feature wood sculptor Darren Jones.

“He’s going to be doing live demonstrations and explaining his artwork and it will be good for the people to come and see that.”

The events are sure to feed off one another as tourists are expected to stop in for a number of activities. Rick Kreklewich has helped organize the Show ‘n’ Shine and he expects the variety of activities will benefit one another.

“I think with the other events we’ll be able to attract more people to come out.”

The event displayed 40 vehicles last year.

“It’s free and it’s a good thing for everyone in the family to come down to. Last year we had kids voting on the best cars, trucks and hot rods and with all the other events going on they can do that as well.”

The July 11 Show ‘n’ Shine will also be at Pas-Ka-Poo Park where a concession will be opened throughout the day as well as a pancake breakfast in the morning and burgers in the afternoon.

Karroll notes that Rimbey residents should be proud of the park.

“It’s a park to be envied. We encourage all the people in Rimbey to come out and do the tour,” he said, adding there will be a $700 grand prize draw on the weekend.

The park is the perfect spot for both Art in the Park and the Show ‘n’ Shine.

“The car club guys love the venue too because they’re in the shade in the trees. It’s a great venue for displaying.”

Of course the Main Street Shootout will be a blast as well. The 100-foot side-by-side is scheduled for a practice run at 11 a.m. on July 10, with races at 1 p.m.

Don’t forget the Farmers’ Market, which has been running for more than two months now and will be a two-day event for this weekend.

“It was voted top market in Alberta for operations last year,” says Karroll, who adds it’s the place to be for breakfast every weekend. “We served 14 dozen eggs last Saturday.”

The town is sure to see its share of tourists and with so much going on, it won’t take much effort to find something to do.

“It should be fun for the whole family.”
