Elementary school nears fundraising goal

Laughter is a valuable fundraising tool. Rimbey Elementary School is $11,670.81 closer

Laughter is a valuable fundraising tool.

Rimbey Elementary School is $11,670.81 closer to constructing the playground that’s been in the works for the last seven years.

Comedy Night in Rimbey featured comedians Kevin McGrath and York Underwood whose talents were put in the spotlight and helped raise money for the playground.

‘They brought in a lot of money, and we had a lot of support from the businesses and the parents,” said Bobbie Dudenhoeffer, a parent associated with the fundraiser.

Underwood was a last minute addition to the program when another comedian cancelled at the last minute. Underwood had researched Rimbey and was able to include attributes about the town into his performance, Dudenhoeffer explained.

Headlining act, McGrath was also well received. “Our feedback is everybody thought he was great.”

Although the $11,670.81 is down from the $15,000 raised last year, Dudenhoeffer says 150 tickets were sold this year.

Together the two comedy nights have raised approximately $27,000 for the playground, and in the past seven years close to $55,000 has been raised in total.

“Our goal is $60,000. The playground is actually $120,000. Once we get the $120,000 we can apply for government grants,” said Dudenhoeffer.

The next fundraiser for the playground, Cirque de Rimbey, will take place March 15 at 7 p.m., at the Rimbey Community Centre.
