TREENA MIELKE/Rimbey Review

The Rimbey and District Horticulture and Craft Show, coming up soon, will offer a potpourri of excellence in a variety of events.

This year’s show will be held Aug. 19 and 20 at the Rimbey Drop In Seniors Center and will feature perennial and annual collections of vegetables, fruit and herbs. Thread arts, quilts, miscellaneous crafts, juniors’ entries, digital and conventional photography, culinary arts and writing will also be part of the show.

Show chairperson Mary Burrows said several hundred entries come in each year with horticulture being the main feature. She encourages people in the district to enter, adding that the horticultural judges are accredited by the Alberta Horticultural Association.

She noted that Rimbey & District Horticultural Club operates under the umbrella of the Rimbey & District Agriculture Society and the show has been ongoing since the 1920s, with the exception of the war years.

While Burrows noted that flower and vegetable entries can be lovely, the weather plays a determining factor in quality.

“A hail storm happening right before the entry deadline is not a good thing,” she said. “How kind the weather is definitely plays a role.”

The first day of the show will be strictly for judging. Items are to be dropped off at the drop in centre from 9 a.m. to noon and the judging will begin at 1 p.m.

On Saturday, public viewing will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bench entries will be accepted at the east entrance of the Rimbey Drop In Centre. No items are to be picked up until the end of the show and the presentation of awards at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

All horticultural judges are accredited by the Alberta Horticultural Association.

Rimbey & District Horticultural Club has supported Pas Ka Poo Park in the upkeep of the rose beds, perennials and other flowerbeds. The club is able to continue to do this because of the help of volunteers who turn out annually to assist with the planting and pruning.
