Old man winter not a golfer

TREENA MIELKE/Rimbey Review

The golf season, ever dependent on the weather, is off to a slow start this year, but golf course owners are ever hopeful warmer temperatures are on the horizon.

Paula Madu, who owns Rimbey Golf Course with her husband Doug, said she is hopeful the course will be open by May long weekend.

“We have been fortunate a couple of times and been able to open May 1st, and if it is earlier we get excited, but this year it might be foolishly optimistic to even hope for the long weekend.”

Many of the fairways of the Rimbey nine-hole golf course are shaded by mature Spruce trees and Madu noted there is a pile of snow on hole number three.

However, the weather will, no doubt, eventually turn around and Madu is looking forward to the upcoming season.

She noted there are a few changes at the course this year, including the Mad Caterers taking over complete responsibility for food service.

Other changes include a chance for the golfing public to take advantage of clinics being taught by golf pro Kevin Snell.

Leagues at Rimbey Golf Course include men’s on Mondays, ladies on Tuesday, and mixed and seniors on Thursdays. There is also a dinner and nine hole special on Thursdays.

Weather at the Gull Lake Executive Par 3 Golf Course, located on the northwest side of Gull Lake, has also been a decided detriment this year, although the pro shop is now open.

CarlaMcCann, who owns the golf course with her husband Eamon said TaylorMade golf equipment is available at the pro shop this year along with Callaway equipment and Adidas footwear.

McCann said a couple of the bunkers have been rebuilt, but other than those renovations, the scenic little course remains the same; a delightful nine-hole challenge for novice and experienced golfers alike.

League play at Gull Lake is scheduled to begin on May 3 with men’s and women’s groups to get underway. The senior’s league is to begin May 4, the mixed league will start May 5 and the junior league is to start May 7. The mixed Saturday night league will begin May 21. A steak sandwich special is to be available on Thursdays.

McCann said the late start is disappointing, but certainly not unheard of.

“It is Alberta, you just have to go with the flow.”
