A Ponoka teen who doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty when she’s working on her truck and has a special place in her heart for patients at the brain injury unit in the Centennial Centre, has been crowned

Miss Rimbey Rodeo. Kellyn Christensen received the crown from last year’s queen, Emily Henshel at the Rimbey Rodeo, July 13.

“I was very surprised,” she said. “I had no idea I had won.”

Christensen, 19, enjoyed participating in the competition.

“The highlight was definitely meeting all the other girls. We became very close. I also enjoyed a dinner I attended at the Ponoka Stampede following the parade. I even got to meet Miss Rodeo Canada, Gillian Shields there.”

As rodeo queen, Christensen will be an ambassador for Rimbey, attending parades and other events where her presence is required.

Christensen lives on a small acreage and has two horses that she works with regularly. She is an accomplished horsewoman and sometimes competes in fun horse shows in the area. When she’s not busy working, volunteering or spending time with her horses, she enjoys working on her 1998 Chevy truck.

The fact her mom, Tova Christensen, ran for Ponoka Stampede Queen in 1986 and won Miss Congeniality prompted Kellyn to compete.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to promote Rimbey.”

As well as winning the rodeo crown, Christensen also won the horsemanship pattern and public speaking competitions.

Twenty-one-year old Brittany Kroening from Millet won the title of Miss Rimbey Rodeo Princess.

Kroening will step in for Christensen when she cannot attend an event.

Eighteen-year-old Lakia Steeves from Bluffton won Miss Congeniality.
