The new Legion executive Garreth Jones, President; Christine Fernie, Vice-president; Al Lewis, Secretary; and Lori Lewis, Treasurer, were installed at our January dinner meeting.

2022 was an active year with the celebration of Neville Roper’s 100th birthday in March, the annual District 4 Legion Camp-out and pancake breakfasts in Bluffton on the May long weekend, Rimbey’s July 1st celebrations and on the Rimbey Rodeo weekend the Legion members rode in the parade and hosted a pancake breakfast. Bingos were held on the 2nd and 4th Friday nights monthly and regular meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month, except for July and August.

Our largest activity, the Poppy Campaign began in October with the poster and literacy contests held in local schools. The provincial first place winners from Rimbey are published annually in the Military Service Recognition Books available at the Legion or online at Military Service Recognition Books – The Royal Canadian Legion – Alberta-NWT Command (abnwtlegion.com). Thanks to the support of over a dozen volunteers, 99 wreaths and 59 poppy boxes were delivered to local businesses and Remembrance Day Ceremonies returned to the Peter Lougheed Community Centre with over 250 attendees.

The Legion’s mission is to serve veterans, including serving military and RCMP members and their families, to promote Remembrance and to serve our community and country. Membership is open to all members of the community who are interested in honouring veterans and serving their community. For further information, guests are welcome at monthly meetings or you can check us out online at www.legion.ca.
