This year, the service will be held at the Legion, rather than the Community Centre

On Oct. 30 the Royal Canadian Legion will start it’s annual Poppy Campaign. As in past years Rimbey Branch No. 36 will be involved, but this year there will be some changes.

Legion members will be going out to businesses in Rimbey dropping off wreaths or crosses for display and poppy trays to start our time of Remembrance. The community has again stepped up to show its support for its local Legion and the work it does for the people that reside here.

The big difference this year will be the community service which is normally held at the Community Centre, but with COVID 19 restrictions the ceremony will be held at the Legion on 50 Street instead. Weather permitting it will be held outside in the front of the Branch, where the people of Rimbey and the surrounding area may attend while self distancing. To protect our friends and neighbours the wearing of masks is required.

The service this year will be shortened with only a small number of wreaths being laid at the cenotaph. One of these wreaths will be laid by a Legion member for all of the families who normally lay a wreath for a veteran that has passed on.

The street will be closed off from 9 a.m. until noon with the service starting at approximately 10:50 a.m. and end approximately 11:20 a.m.

If the weather turns bad, the service will be held inside the Legion with Legion Members and a few guests. The wreaths will be placed outside and the public can then come throughout the day and place their poppies on the wreaths at the cenotaph in an Act of Remembrance.

Any family that would like to make a donation to the Legion on behalf of a veteran can do so by mail to the Rimbey Legion Branch No. 36 , P.O. Box 508 , Rimbey, Alta,, T0C 2J0. or Contact Lance Hannesson at 403-913-9795.

The service will be streamed live on Facebook through the Rimbey Legion FaceBook page, Rimbey Legion Branch #36. This will happen whether the service is inside or out so those that cannot attend can view the service.
