Spring melt has public works busy

By TREENA MIELKE

With spring finally peeking its stubborn head out and about, the huge amount of snow that has been dumped on central Alberta all winter continues to create havoc.

Rimbey public works foreman Vern Browne has been at his job for a long time and can’t recall ever seeing so much snow.

“It’s the most I’ve ever seen in 29 years,” he said.

Browne encourages residents to chip ice away on front side curbs to encourage water flow.

“A lot of people have front driveways and this will help,” he said.

“This will be the year people will find out how well their basements keep the water out,” he said.

The large accumulation of snow means public works crews need to keep a close eye on the run off to prevent possible blockage problems.

“We need to make sure the storm sewers are open so the water can drain properly and that the storm drains are in good shape.”

Browne said a steamer may be brought in later to deal with frozen culverts.

The melting snow has caused some roads in town to be rough and slushy, but Browne said public works is dealing with the clean up as quickly as possible.

“”We can’t be everywhere at once. It will be good once the bare pavement is showing.”

Browne said flooding in the town is not likely due to the topography of the area.

“Rimbey is built on a hill and the run off goes in all directions.”
