Two new spring events for Bentley

The Bentley Care Centre Auxiliary will host an evening of musical entertainment along with a catered meal and silent auction at the Bentley Ag Centre May 7.

By June Norvila

The Bentley Care Centre Auxiliary's mandate is to support the Bentley Care Centre, its residents and its staff.

Starting in 1993, the group of volunteers staged 10 highly successful Spring Fling Fashion Shows. The last time the Bentley Care Centre Auxiliary hosted the ladies night out Spring Fling was in 2005. The shows were sellouts and proved very popular. They always included a first class catered meal, highlighted local models, and gave exposure to smaller businesses from the area. The show became too big a venture with too little help.

They then hosted the Robbie Burns extravaganzas in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Interest has waned after three years, and has now become too expensive, so the group has decided to try something new.

This year they will host an evening of musical entertainment along with a catered meal and silent auction at the Bentley Ag Centre May 7. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with happy hour. The catered supper will start around 6 p.m. with entertainment to follow around 8 p.m.

The entertainment this year will be Memories with Lothar. Lothar Twardzik is an entertainer from the Delburne area. He plays the accordion in a way that is hard to describe and his music is very 'danceable' and 'listenable' say those who have heard him before. The dance floor awaits.

All proceeds are earmarked for items for resident care and comfort in the Bentley Care Centre. In the past funds have gone to such things as a big screen television, beds and other furniture, equipment for the hair saloon, corsages for residents on their birthdays, development of the patio area, patio furniture and the back yard. English bone china and furniture was purchased for special occasions hosted in the private dining room.

This year funds are designated to go toward an electric patient lift to replace the older mechanical one that is getting worn out.

Silent auction items are gratefully being accepted and will be set up around the perimeter of the hall for bidders to peruse.

For more information about the event or how you can help out call Doris at (403) 748-3943 or the Bentley Care Centre during office hours at (403) 748-4115.

There will be a special price to accommodate those who cannot make it for the supper but still wish to attend the entertainment and silent auction in support of the care centre.

Gardener’s Gala planned

On May 8, starting at 1 p.m., the Bentley Library Society is hosting a Gardener's Gala in the historic Bentley Community Hall. It is a new venture for the Library Society and is open to anyone.

Along with the afternoon tea with light refreshments provided, Holly Waldron from Holly's Greenhouse will do a demonstration, provide information, and answer questions concerning gardening and planters.

Participants are asked to BYOP (bring your own planting pots), and possibly gardening gloves, if they want to make up their own planter to take home with them. It could make a nice gift. Soil and plants will be available. There will be a silent auction of spring and gardening items held in conjunction with the event.

Any proceeds will be used to enhance the Bentley Municipal Library and its programs.

Call Arlene at (403) 748-4429 for ticket information, or if you can help, or if you wish to donate an item to the silent auction in support of the local library. Pre-registration would be appreciated as it would help with the planning of the lunch.

All funds raised from both of these events will stay within the community.
