Horses, people, mountains and history come together in the photography of Lacombe artist Arto Djerdjerian.

His photography will be featured at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG) through the Ya Ha Tinda - The Ranch: Photography by Arto Djerdjerian exhibit until March.

Djerdjerian, who currently lives in the Lacombe area, was born in Cairo, Egypt to Armenian parents. He was raised in and studied photography in Montreal. Living and working in Alberta since 1977, he has dedicated full time to his practice as a photographer in Alberta. His works include special commissions, architectural, corporate, equine, and portraiture.

For six years, through patient observation, he has photographed life on the ranch at Ya Ha Tinda. Djerdjerian skillfully composes photographs that capture the workaday routine of the ranch; images that speak of gritty, hard work but also of magnificent animals and stunning natural surroundings.

“Arto’s photographs offer us a glimpse of the little-seen world of the Ya Ha Tinda Ranch – the horses, the people and the day-to-day rhythm through the seasons,” said Joanne Gruenberg, Curator of Art for the MAG.

Ya Ha Tinda – The Ranch: Photography will run from Dec. 4, 2021 to March 5, 2022. There will be an opening reception on Dec. 12 from 2 p.m to 4 p.m.. On Jan. 29, 2022 there will also be an Artist Talk with Djerdjerian where he will detail and discuss his 6 year process on photographing Ya Ha Tinda, the ranch.

Pre-registration required on MAG website.
