Rimbey's Coldest Night Walk definitely lived up to its name on Feb. 3, as a group of around 20 participants headed out in almost -30 weather to raise money for the Rimbey Food Bank and FCSS programs.

Because of this year's extremely cold temperatures, they decided to shorten the walk.

The walk is also a chance to educate those who are participating, raising awareness for important issues, like homelessness.

"We always spend some time talking about that with whoever shows up. We mention how hard it is if you're hungry or cold and what that feels like, and what that would mean, especially at this time of year when it's so cold," said Dirma Roseboom, who helps out with the walk.

Roseboom added that they've also looked into numbers of how many access the food bank and things like that to present to walk participants.

The Rimbey walk started around six years ago, and was initiated by the Girls Everywhere Meeting the Saviour (GEMS) group, with Judy Fairfield as its main organizer.

The walk is also held in other communities, where people can pledge money to a good cause.

"Judy sends out letters to businesses and people that have donated in the past, and we also gave our girls group pledges to ask their friends and neighbours," said Roseboom.

No amount has been calculated just yet, as donations are still being sent in. The walk will take place again next year, and Roseboom said they are hoping to get more participants involved.
