The Spring Break Family Dance is coming up on March 29 at Lincoln Hall in Lacombe County, featuring Benjamin Christiani on the fiddle and Blaine Lutwick on the keyboard. There will also be a couple of other fiddlers joining the group.

Profits from the event will go toward The Broom Tree Foundation, which helps support women and families going through a crisis, and leading them into community-based support.

Julie Ten Hove, who started the event, grew up dancing with her family at a different hall and thought she'd start something like this in the community for others to enjoy.

"It was always a dream of mine. Those dances were so much fun when I was young. They were just a blast, and I always thought it would be so nice if we could do that again, or if they could have something like that again," she said.

The idea came about after she heard there were two or three dances already put on in Eckville and Bentley by some fiddlers there.

"I was so excited because at one, they had 150 students, and at another one, they had around 300," she said, adding that it was exciting to see it take off.

Ten Hove herself has grandchildren and has found out that young kids are taking dance lessons in school and know how to do some of the country dances, line dances and even some line dances.

"My grandchildren are in their teen years, most of them, and I thought it'd be so much fun to enjoy something that I enjoyed."

At the upcoming dance, Laura Watson will be teaching some line dancing during the break. There will also be some old time dance instruction.

The dance runs from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and people are asked to bring a snack to share. There will be some refreshments.

"They're doing an amazing job of helping out women."

There will be a free will offering bucket there for those wanting to support The Broom Tree Foundation.
