Rimbey RCMP are reminding drivers to pay extra attention in school and playground zones this month, as children return to class.

They are asking drivers to consider a few tips to keep everyone safe including planning ahead by giving yourself extra time to avoid being rushed as it can prevent speeding and allows you to keep safety-focused.

Knowing the rules of the road is another tip. Reducing your speed to the posted limit in school or playground zones and paying attention to crossing guard directions is important, along with not passing school busses with flashing alternating red lights (unless on the other side of a divided highway), as this could result in fines of up to $567 and six demerits. People should also avoid blocking crosswalks with their vehicle.

Lastly, staying vigilant is important, as children can get distracted when school is starting or letting out and may not fully understand the rules of the road.

Though times may vary in different municipalities, the speed limit for both urban and rural school zones is 30 km/h unless otherwise posted.
