With the onset of winter driving conditions and cooler weather, the likelihood of encountering wildlife on the roads increases. Animals are more active in the fall and winter, searching for food and migrating to warmer areas. This can lead to more wildlife crossing on roadways, making it crucial for drivers to be extra vigilant.
Rimbey RCMP are advising motorists to take extra precautions to avoid potentially dangerous collisions by following a few driving tips.
One of those tips is slowing down and staying alert, especially at dawn and dusk when animals are the most active. Using high beams at night where possible is also a good idea to increase visibility and spot animals from further away. Drivers should watch signs indicating areas with high wildlife activity and reduce speed accordingly.
Other tips include being alert to more animals crossing the road if you see one already, as more may follow. Never swerve to avoid hitting an animal. Brake firmly instead and stay in your lane to prevent losing control of your vehicle. If a collision is unavoidable, aim for the rear of the animal rather than a head-on impact. Ensuring your windshield is clean, and that wipers are working properly is a good idea to maintain a clear view. Always wear your seatbelt, as it offers the best protection in case of a sudden stop or collision and be extra cautious in rural or forested areas, as wildlife is more likely to be present.
