Rimbey Town Council held its budget meeting on March 6, with a currently planned capital budget of $1,976,607 for this year.

The Municipal Tax Rate in Rimbey will be increasing 1.5 per cent, which Rimbey Mayor Rick Pankiw believes is one of the lowest in the province.

"We tried to cut as much as we could. Normally, we'd be going to FCM, which is the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, in Ottawa, but we've cancelled that trip. We're doing everything we can as a council to lessen the impact on our taxpayers," he said.

Pankiw added that everybody is feeling the pinch right now.

Pankiw believes the government has hurt every taxpayer in the province by raising school taxes 5.4 per cent.

"It's not right. In the times they are right now, the last thing anyone can afford is their taxes go way up."

In terms of some of the Town's planned capital additions, one of the projects they've put on hold is the complete rebuild of 50th St. to 51st St. Instead, they are planning on rebuilding the 43 St. road, along with the paving as one of the major projects this year.

"We were hoping we'd be able to do two, but we can't," said Pankiw.

They will also be putting $60,00 into the arena for dehumidifying the summer ice, along with other projects.

One of the projects on hold is the $85,000 for the Spray Park Flow Through System at the pool. That will be brought back to administration for further discussion.
