Rockin' Rimbey back for more summer fun

Rockin' Rimbey will take place Aug. 15-19 this year

Rockin' Rimbey will be kicking off this year on Thursday, Aug. 15, with FCSS hosting a free beef-on-a-bun meal at the Ag. grounds from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Family night will take place on Aug. 16, with E.T. on the big screen. Date night will take place on Aug. 17 with American Graffiti playing. Both drive-ins kick off at 9:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night. Admission is by donation, with a huge concession.

"We're actually serving concession all day Friday during kiddies day at the Agrim and Saturday as well as our Friday and Saturday night performances," said Laverne Oberhammer, one of the chairpersons for Rockin' Rimbey along with his wife Michelle.

The Ice Cream Social will take place Saturday afternoon on Main Street in front of the Town Office, along with businesses on Main Street in and around Rimbey taking part in the boardwalk.

"There is Parkin' In The Park being featured at PasKaPoo Park, with the Historical Society hosting a car show on the Saturday," said Laverne, adding that they will be kicking it off with a pancake breakfast in the morning and barbecue in the afternoon.

People will get to watch a cruise of cars, which will take place after the car show, with lots of the cars involved in Parkin' In The Park taking part in that.

The Rimbey Agriculture Society also has a huge list of items taking place in the Co-operators Agrim Centre, including their big country fair.

On Thursday, Aug. 15, they will be accepting their bench show exhibits, drop off all day that day. A bench show involves various items that people can bring in, which are then judged throughout the weekend. These items include horticulture, thread arts, crafts, culinary arts, photography and more. There will also be a Kansas Ridge Gymkhana event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. that night.

"On Friday the bench show will be judged in the morning. Some might be judged the Thursday evening too, it just depends on my judges schedules," said Lynn Johnson, who is a fair organizer and sits on the Rimbey Ag Society Board.

She added that the judges are local business people.

The bench show starts at 11 a.m. on the Friday. That day is also a full kids day.

"We have everything from bouncy castles to kids games and a few other things happening in the indoor arena. The bouncy castles are huge, and they're going to fill up half the arena, but it'll be a lot of fun."

That will be a $5 admission.

On Saturday the bench show will continue on from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be sheep dog trials from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a barrel racing and pole bending jackpot from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. that night.

On Sunday, the bench show continues to run, along with an all-breed horse show all day, starting at 9 a.m.

Monday will be a free open family ride day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Laverne added, "it's Rockin' Rimbey, we're here to celebrate summer and just let your hair down and get out and forget our day to day events and just have fun."
