The time is finally here. Twelve teams from across Alberta will be heading to Rimbey later this month from Jan. 22-26 for the 2025 Alberta Women's Curling Championship presented by Sentinel Storage.
Some of the teams include Team Richards, Team Plett, Team Martens, Team Hartwell and more.
Putting the event together has been a real team effort from those in the community, including the over 180 volunteers.
"We're really impressed with that number. We couldn't believe how many people came out to help support, mainly from our local area," said Patrick Rurka, president of the Rimbey Curling Club and co-chair of the Alberta Women's Curling Championships with Lisa Shukin.
There are also 85 different businesses in the community who have helped sponsor the event.
"The majority of our local businesses up and down Main Street have stepped up to either help us with a cash donation or with services or products they can provide," he said, adding that restaurants are helping provide some of the meals, while electricians in town are helping out with running all the audio and video equipment.
They will be holding a volunteer and sponsor appreciation Night Jan. 21 for all those who have helped out with the event.
The Rimbey Lions Club along with the Rimbey Curling Club will also be holding a fishing raffle during the event, worth $20,000.
A sponsor named Jamie Graham, who runs Little Guy Oilfield Rentals and owns a fishing lodge in Oona River in B.C., gave the fishing trip as a gift to be able to raffle off.
It will be three nights and four days, along with flights from Edmonton to Prince Rupert. From Prince Rupert, the winner would then hop onto a float plane over to the fishing lodge.
The raffle will be on Jan. 26.
