Following an 18-hour standoff with the Camrose Police Service (CPS), a Camrose man was arrested and charged with attempted murder, among other offences.
At about 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 17, CPS responded to multiple calls reporting gunshots in the area of 42 St. and 52 Ave. Officers were dispatched immediately, and while they were conducting checks on local residents, shots were fired in their direction.
During the active threat, police secured the area, advising residents to stay in their homes while others were temporarily evacuated.
CPS contained the suspect inside his residence until the RCMP Emergency Response Team and the Edmonton Police Service Tactical Unit arrived.
During the long standoff, the suspect allegedly shot several rounds into the street and alleyway.
Shannon Murray Ellis, 52, eventually surrendered to police and was taken into custody without further incident.
Ellis was additionally charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm with intent to injure; possession of a weapon dangerous to the public; careless use of a firearm, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon while prohibited. Further charges may be pending.
According to CPS, their investigation revealed the incident started with an argument between Ellis and his common-law partner. Before police arrived, Ellis allegedly fired several shots towards his partner and into her vehicle and she fled the scene.
Ellis is currently in custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance in provincial court on Oct. 23.
