Contributor has high praise for local boxing club

Dear Editor,

I want to express some of the satisfaction I have received from working with the Rimbey Boxing Club for the past few months. It is so fun to watch the camaraderie that develops between the participants. It is fun to watch 17, 18 and 20 year olds working with, and encouraging 13 and 14 year olds, cheering them on, rejoicing with their achievements or supporting them in their losses.

I applaud the effort and discipline that these people put into their training so they can match their skills with another. I admire their willingness to step into the ring, knowing that this contest will hurt.

I enjoy watching the sincere respect that the majority of boxers have for their opponents. It is a genuine fight in the ring but respect and admiration for their abilities after.

“Your punch hurts!”, is a compliment.

Someone once told me that coaches are hard to come by because, “who wants to spend that much time with someone else’s kids?” The Rimbey Boxing Club is extremely fortunate to have Mike Smith as head coach. He has been coaching boxing for nearly 20 years. He has a genuine affection for those he is coaching and patiently but firmly expects the kids to do their best. He is a master coach. It is a pleasure to support him and the other coaches.

Rimbey is also extremely fortunate to have Kandi Wyatt, a world-class boxer, training here. She is a marvelous mentor and help to the others, generously helping and guiding them.

I have really enjoyed watching these young people develop their physical abilities, their confidence, discipline, focus and support for each other. I would like to extend my appreciation to the Rimbey Boxing Club for what you’ve given me.
