Dear Editor;

Chicken Little has just informed us that Alberta is about to “hit the wall”.

First, the underground storage of carbon dioxide “could be inducing earthquakes”.

Benjamin Tal, the chief economist for the Canadian Bank of Commerce released a report about two years ago in which he listed places around the world where carbon dioxide is storable. His findings said that the formations in western Canada are among the most satisfactory in the world. It has been a common practice for years to store natural gas in underground caverns. Is natural gas so different than carbon dioxide?

Secondly, the provision of the US Energy Independence and Security Act is redirecting the import of energy-intensive fuels. “The bottom line is Americans want their government to invest in new clean energy,” said an attorney from the Natural Resource Defense Council. Apparently Americans would prefer to be at the mercy of the whims of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez or Iran’s rather mercurial government et al., than to utilize “dirty oil”.

Sorry, I don’t buy the notion that Americans who are wrestling with a recession and slowing economy are pleased to pay extra money or to stand in line waiting for rationed gas like in the early 1970s.

Perhaps we could have a small wager that within six months or a year at most, there will be an exemption for Canadian fossil fuels.

Yes, Chicken Little is warning us that the sky is falling. For myself, I will continue to invest in Alberta.
