Market helps businesses

Dear Editor:

The past president of the Bluffton and District Chamber of Commerce is to be lauded for time and effort put into re-vitalizing the Centennial Rock site on Highway 20.

Unfortunately, a clash of values seems to have resulted in “collateral damage.” Valuing local tradition is essential in any effort relating to a community. This may result in time-consuming consultation but nevertheless, it is essential. Much as we may want to, no one can put time in a bottle. However, we can make the best use of our time and space.

As a member of the community, and current president of the Bluffton and District Chamber of Commerce, I believe that an appropriate use of the gravelled parking lot at the rock site is a Thursday market.

The recommendation (in a previous letter) to have the market at the Bluffton Hall deserved consideration, however, access to that venue on consecutive Thursdays is not assured due to recreational or other rental activities; the parking lot at the rock site is always empty.

What will you see on Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m. at the rock? You will see a pleasing group of local entrepreneurs, networking, buying and selling, providing their own tables, tents, umbrellas, tailgates, contributing their time and effort to the advancement of local commerce and enjoying each others company.

A welcomed spin-off of these activities would be for the Bluffton district to become known as a beneficial area in which to live, work or visit. This is the goal of the Bluffton and District Chamber of Commerce.
