Neighbours create community at Leedale Hall

Dear Editor:

I believe that the importance of community activities in the lives of everyone from the youngest to the oldest cannot be overstated. Being involved and knowing your neighbours contributes to building a safe community as well as assuring the growth of future local leaders.

My husband and I attended the Valentine’s supper at the Leedale Hall. As if by magic, the hall had been changed into a five-star dining room. The décor rivaled anything to be found in a commercial venue and it was all done by volunteers. The round dining tables were dressed in red and white with delightful centrepieces and sparkling wine and water glasses. In keeping with the Valentine’s theme, much of the wall space was draped with white material and decorated with cupids. The addition of tiny lights on carefully arranged tree branches added to the effect.

And that was just the first impression.

What was to follow was a charming evening being served by the young people of the Leedale area. What’s so special about that? Well 10 years ago, those attractive, polite, hard-working youngsters were little scamps who were well known to play catch-me-if-you-can around and under the banquet tables. Now they are all grown and contributing to their community.

I would like to add that the professional menu, excellent dinner and delectable dessert all appeared to be the work of first class chefs. If Olympic medals were being given to groups that demonstrate and understand the importance of ‘community’ in people’s lives, then the Leedale ladies deserve a gold medal.
