Pro-active teenager “disgusted” with obscenity-riddled picnic table

Dear Editor,

Just this past week I was strolling through the park with my boyfriend when we decided to sit down at a picnic table. The moment I sat down my eyes glided downwards and my jaw dropped. I was completely and utterly disgusted at the obscene things written on every inch of this picnic table. I sat in shock for a couple minutes as I gazed down upon the cruel and thoughtless messages.

I looked around me blinking a couple times to see if I was where I had assumed I was, quickly I realized, yes, I was right. I was in fact, in a playground, built for children. I myself do enjoy tasteful street art but this was in no way art. The scribbles written on this picnic table are a result of stupidity, boredom and a serious lack of respect, all rolled into one.

It is to my knowledge that there is not an extremely large amount of activities for teenagers in this town, but that is no excuse for this type of behavior, especially on display. I have taken it upon myself to temporarily fix this situation by painting over the obscenities. One of my concerns with purchasing the paint and going through the work is that I am positive it will only last a few days. Yet it comforts me to know that it could be a couple more days that children can enjoy the park to its fullest extent without tainting their innocent minds.

Every child deserves a place to play that is a safe haven, free of crude and violent messages.
