Reader responds to letter re: “Do Rimbey businesses really want us to shop locally?”

Dear “name withheld by request”,

So, you’re a newcomer to the Rimbey area, why don’t you pack up and head back to the city with your big faceless big box stores? I don’t know who you are but I think I overheard you at one of the local liquor stores telling the attendant “You people in Rimbey are ripping everyone off” because they wouldn’t give you a 10 per cent discount on your case of beer. What a nit!! You probably are the type of person that hops into their big fancy vehicle and goes to the food bank and Good Will for handouts. I’ll bet you’ve never tipped a waitress regardless of the effort they have provided you, which is, of course, never good enough. We’ve already lost a wonderful bakery because you probably buy your bread at some big city retail outlet.

I also am a newcomer to the Rimbey area. I have been here for six years and have found the people in Rimbey to be the nicest anywhere, you excluded of course. I also find the business community to be the friendliest, most helpful and generous anywhere. Yes the prices might be marginally higher in some instances but the service they provide to you as a customer is well worth it.

Also, from personal experience, many times has the business community been approached for donations by the many service clubs and fund raising organizations in Rimbey and have always given generously. If you attend a function you would see the generosity of donations in the multitude of silent auctions, but then you probably would be upset at the $10 entry fee for food and entertainment and that the $2 you bid for a $300 barbecue would be over bid by some “ridiculous” price. Go ask your precious big box store manager for a donation for a Fish and Wildlife and Lions and Kinsmen and Legion and Heart Fund and Cancer Research Fund and Drop-in-Centre, and any other function I may have missed, and see what you get. Rimbey is a very generous and community-minded business community that deserves our support!

To end my little rant, I’m proud to be associated with the people and businesses in Rimbey, and I’m not ashamed to have my name printed.
