Young letter writer urges other youth to join Horticultural Society

Dear Editor,

I was very busy this summer but one of the fortunate things I got to do was enter in the Rimbey and District Horticultural Show. I learned about it by my grandmother, Geri Lyons, who is an active member.

You can enter many things like flowers, vegetables, arts and crafts, photography, baking, and preserves. I’ve entered for four years now in anything from colouring and printing to photography and crafts. For the past two years I have won the junior award, for the highest points in the 6-12 years category. This year I was awarded with five firsts, 1 second, and 1 third in photography, and 1 first and two seconds in crafts.

I enjoy participating in the show because I enjoy the competition. I also enjoy how my whole family participates in the show by entering in different categories.

Unfortunately most of the volunteers are seniors. I often volunteer to help my grandmother even though I live an hour away.

I wish more people were aware of this awesome opportunity to participate and show off their creative side. Also I wish more people would step up to volunteer to continue to carry on this rural tradition. This club has had annual fairs since 1922. Wouldn’t it be cool if they could be around to celebrate a 100th year anniversary?

So please keep the tradition going and volunteer and become a member of the Rimbey and District Horticultural Club. All ages are welcome and I look forward to meeting you next year.

Sincerely,

Kayla Leeder
