According to organizers and participants, Canal Days at Meridian Beach at Gull Lake held Aug. 18 and 19 was a huge success.

“The weather was good, although the windy came up and ruffled the lake, somewhat. The canal, however, was calm and a great place for races and the float parade.

Saturday morning was busy and the beach was filled with people visiting at the boat launch, looking at new boats and antique cars at the Show ‘n Shine. There was also a market along the banks of the canal that had everything from local artists to kittens for sale,” said organizer Tonya Mckechnie.

There were more contestants this year than ever, especially in the 12 and under paddle board and kayak races, she said. Both children and adults participated in the races and, it seemed, a good time was had by all.

There were several amazingly decorated rafts this year and the community spirit was evident as the groups paraded their rafts on the canal. Some of these creations included Grease Lightning, Candy Land, Star Wars, Up and A Neighborhood Fiesta.

The overall winner of the Canal Days races with their Caesar’s Palace Homemade Raft was the Raugust family. As winner, they were given the grand prize of the coveted ‘paddle’ which they will be allowed to keep at their home for a year until it is passed along to the winner next year.

The best homemade raft went to Grease and A Neighbourhood Fiesta won for best costumes.

The day ended with a barbecue, an award ceremony and a dance with the band, ‘When Pig’s Fly’ from Calgary.
