There will be stories and fun anecdotes galore at the Rimbey Drop-In Centre on May 30, as two storied guests will be featured at a special event.

Former broadcast and radio host Bob Layton and 'eye in the sky' journalist Shane Blakely will be chatting about funny, bizarre, and even a few sad stories from their work experiences "behind the microphone and high in the air," noted a description of the event, which starts at 2 p.m.

Both men have also penned a few books about their experiences, including Layton's Welcome to Radio!, I’ll Puke in Your Pocket!: The Many Side-Hustles of Bob Layton, and Much More, and How to Write Your Life Story, and Blakely's An Eye in the Sky Look at Edmonton's History.

"He is also a ventriloquist," said Drop-In centre member Pam Scott, referring to Layton. "From what I've read, he went down to Las Vegas to learn how to do this with some of the best ventriloquists in the country.

"Shane will also have much to share from what he has seen from up above, too." she said, adding that the duo's books will be available for purchase at the May 30 event as well. "So its going be be good!

"Coffee and dessert will be served as well."

Scott noted that during the pandemic and afterwards, things of course slowed down a bit at the centre, but that staff and volunteers are eager to get things moving again with a range of programming highlights and events - and the upcoming May 30 occasion seems a key way to help with that process.

"We are hoping to help get things going more, and to also encourage new members to join. It's for those 55 and up," she said.

The event will also be held as Seniors' Week kicks off on June 2. "It's perfect timing, really."

The cost to attend is $10 per ticket, which will be available at the door. Proceeds will go to the Rimbey Drop-In Centre (5110 - 53rd Ave). Scott said the Drop-In Centre provides an excellent source of connection, and many opportunities to meet others and make new friends.

"Everyone is so friendly," she said. "There does seem to be a bond amongst our members."
