The contingent of Rimbey athletes who traveled to Calgary to attend the Alberta 55 plus Provincial Games came back with a load of hardware.
Al Elliott fared extremely well, and one can be sure when he steps on the scale wearing all his medals his weight will go up considerably.
Elliott brought home four bronze medals, winning in the running broad jump, javelin, discus and shotput.
However, as much the congenial 84-year-old is proud of his medals, he insists that win, or lose he would attend the Games.
“The medals are just the icing on the cake. I love the whole event, the people, the socializing. It’s just fun.”
Janet Henry who won gold in golfing agreed.
“It was very enjoyable,” she said.
Henry hasn’t golfed for three years, but picked up the game again this year.
Duncan Congcar brought home a bronze in his age division. The avid golfer was pleased with his win, but noted there was “only one stroke difference,” in the medal winners.
Dave Kreutz, who won gold in the men’s double badminton competition said he was pleased he decided to take on the challenge.
“It was good competition,” he said.
Monty Haslam, Lorraine Jarl and Barbara Patey and Alvin Goetz won gold in the 75 plus bowling competition.
Duncan Congcar, Janet Henry, Elizabeth Baron and Alvin Goetz will represent Zone 4 at the Alberta 55 plus provincials in floor curling to be held Sept. 13, 14 and 15.
The Games were incorporated under the name of ASCSRA (Alberta Senior Citizens Sport and Recreation Association) as a volunteer action group on January 31st, 1980.
The purpose was to promote sport and recreation development for Albertans and to act as the provincial voice of mature adults.
