When it comes to your eyes, are you putting up with poor vision?

Do you find it difficult to see clearly across the room, spot oncoming traffic when driving along Highway 53, or squint to see the entrees on a restaurant menu? Perhaps your children are having a tough time seeing the board at school.

If you or someone in your family is frustrated with not being able to see clearly, a trip to your Central Alberta vision care professional may be in order.

Looking at more than just your vision

Chris Calve, a licensed optician and dispensary manager at Ponoka Eyecare, part of a full-service group that includes eye clinics in Lacombe, Blackfalds, Hanna and Coronation, says today’s specialists can address many issues related to the eyes. Not only can they prescribe the right lenses to allow you to see more clearly, during your exam they’re watching for indicators of other health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and more.

State-of-the-art equipment used for your exam includes an OCT (optical coherence tomography) machine, which takes a three-dimensional scan to help doctors diagnose and manage retinal diseases such as glaucoma; and an Optos ultra widefield retinal imaging machine, which can better detect the presence of disease.

A new expert in your midst

Joining Dr. Dennis Heimdahl and Dr. Wardell ZoBell on the Central Alberta vision care team is associate optometrist Dr. Salina Kanji, who works with patients in the Ponoka, Lacombe and Blackfalds clinics. A world traveller with optometric experience in various areas, from primary care to pediatrics, Dr. Kanji looks forward to helping you with your vision care.

Some other things to consider about your vision care:

  1. Choosing your frames is the fun part When it comes to selecting your eyewear, having a wide selection of frames and professional, personable staff makes it easy to ensure you’ll wind up with a solution that works for you and suits your personality and style.
  2. The sun is cool, cataracts are not Talk to the experts about sunglasses that can help prevent the growth of cataracts by protecting you from the sun’s UV rays.
  3. Screen time can be harmful to young eyes With children spending hours every day looking at electronic screens, their eyesight may be affected. Having an optometrist check to see where they’re at, vision-wise is never a bad idea.
  4. Call ahead In Rimbey, your closest clinics are in Ponoka (1-800-662-7168) or Lacombe (403-782-6077). If you’re a new patient, you can send your basic information and medical history online through a secure form.
