Nanaimo loads up on Shamrocks in WLA junior draft

Timbermen snag Brody Eastwood at No. 4, Victoria junior teammate Jessie King goes next to Shamrocks

Victoria Junior Shamrocks standouts Brody Eastwood and Jessie King went fourth and fifth overall in the Western Lacrosse Association draft Thursday, but will face each other on opposite sides of the floor this summer.

Eastwood was snapped up by the Nanaimo Timbermen with their first pick of the draft, held at the Langley Events Centre. King, last year's top scorer with the Rocks, was taken by the senior Shamrocks.

Nanaimo and Victoria loaded up on graduating Shamrock juniors, selecting five players each.

Victoria took 2013 Junior Rocks' most valuable player Chris Wardle in the second round (#11 overall), Dane Schoor in the third (#20), Cody Hagedorn in the fifth (#34) and Derek Anderson (#41) in the final round.

The Shamrocks also drafted Brandon Bull and Nicholas Stone of Langley.

Coquitlam owned the number 1 pick in the draft and used it to select Tyler Garrison of the Junior Adanacs. Garrison, a faceoff and transition specialist, is playing pro with the Vancouver Stealth of the National Lacrosse League.

The Junior Shamrocks retooled last month by signing a number of graduated Intermediate A players to Junior cards, including Matt Hamilton, Nate and Dallas Wade, Adam Jay, former Intermediate player Matt Baxter and Brock Thompson-Marshall.

Re-signed from last year’s Jr. Rocks team are Jake Cullen, Max Frederickson, Chris Kasper and Derek Leckie.

Additional signings are expected shortly with the final players to be chosen during what is expected to be a highly competitive camp.
