Orange Shirt day on Sept. 29.

This week marks Truth and Reconciliation Week and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30, 2021.

Rimbey Elementary School, Rimbey High School, Bentley School and Bluffton School will be closed on Sept. 30.

Those schools will also have Orange Shirt day on Sept. 29. Students are asked to wear orange shirts and participate in Orange Shirt Day events to recognize and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada.

Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 and originates from the story of Phyllis Webstad from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. Webstad has shared her story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school. Since then, Orange Shirt Day has become an opportunity for First Nations, Métis and Inuit, governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation.
