The ATVs were kicking up mud at the Central Alberta Raceways.

For the first time in its short history the raceway hosted the ATV Mud Bog and events co-ordinator Dale Barr was happy with the way it turned out.

“Brand new events always are a bit of a challenge because we’re trying to line up sponsorship for it and then of course spectators and the participants aren’t exactly sure what they’re going to see but certainly it was a great event for everyone that attended.”

After weather interfered with the start of the raceway’s first event, the Hobby Super Stock, the sun was shining for the Mud Bog on May 16.

As with any big event at the raceway there was no shortage of work in preparation for the day of muddy racing.

“It’s a full week’s work for three or four guys plus the organization side of it, it’s a workload but I guess the success is that we keep growing the facility and we keep adding new events.”

Participants and spectators came from throughout central Alberta and while it was a day of competition the event was all about having some fun.

“The facility is getting quite a good reputation in central Alberta. It’s already building its own following.”

“Most of the participants are just there to have a good day of fun and certainly it was a competition and we had winners in each of the classes. Everyone left with a smile on their face and a little bit of mud hanging from their cheeks.”

Todd Kapalka of Rimbey was named King of the Mud.

After a successful first year, the Mud Bog is poised to become an annual event.

“We certainly expect it to grow over the next number of years and Parkland Sled and ATV has already put their support into it for next year so we know there will be a second event on the ATV Mud Bog.”

Seven events remain on the 2010 schedule including the Outlaw Modified/Truck/Hobby/Super Stock on May 29 at 4 p.m.
