Bentley farmer finishes baling hay on Nov. 29

Baling snow covered hay requires persistence

June Norvila has been a farm girl all her life but, until this year, she has never seen anyone baling hay in November.

“It is just unbelievable,” she said.

Tim Turnbull, who rents land from Norvila agreed that it is most unusual to be baling so late in the season, but that is exactly what he did.

“I didn’t want to leave it just laying there,” he said. “And now it’s done. It’s here.”

To pick up the snow covered hay, Turnbull used an older type baler with bars, a chain and gears.

“I spent every day fixing it, it kept breaking down,” he said. “It is quite old, not an antique, but pretty old.”

Regardless, the baler did the job and Turnbull ended up bailing 40 acres of hay all of which was under snow.

He had the first bale checked for moisture and it registered at 52.9 per cent, much higher than the recommended amount.

However, he has a herd of around 120 cows to feed and they are very much enjoying the moisture laden hay.

“They push you out of the way to get at it,” he said. “And I ended up with three weeks of feed that I would have had otherwise.”

Turnbull lives north of Bentley.
