Rick Boyes believes it is important to be competitive, but he believes it’s more important to do it with integrity.

And in all his years of coaching Boyes has stood by these beliefs.

This year, the long time coach has been recognized as the 2018 Coach of the Year for Volleyball Alberta (Coach – Development Category).

Boyes said he is humbled to receive the award.

“The number of people who have given me opportunity, influenced me and supported me is huge. I owe a great deal to all who have supported what we do, including the athletes, but especially the parents.”

He said the athletes he coaches live by a simple mantra.

“Be better when we leave the gym than when we arrive and build desire to play for life.”

Boyes began coaching junior high school volleyball in Bluffton in 2007 and coached there until 2015.

In 2014 Bluffton was the CWJHAA Champions, the league champions and Wolf Creek Champions.

He was also Rimbey Senior High School volleyball assistant coach in 2011, 2012, and head coach in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and Sylvan Lake Volleyball Club Wave head coach in 2016, 1017 and 2018. He was SLVC Wave Assistant Coach in 2014 and 2015.

During those years, Boyes saw both teams he coached win several awards and medals.

The Rimbey volleyball team was league champions in 2015, 2016 and 2017. They won silver at Provincials in 2016, and fourth at Provincials in 2015.

The SLVC Wave team was a premier silver medalist in 2018, national silver medalist in 2016 and Premier Gold 2016 bronze medalist.

Boyes said he and his wife Karen have enjoyed coaching many of the teams their daughters, Tory and Shae, have played on.

“My family has and is providing me with the most amazing experience in this sport.”

The Coach of the Year is presented to an individual who demonstrates they are a great role model and leader who teaches character and life lessons in addition to volleyball skills and tactics. They go beyond expectations to ensure every athlete, and the team, reaches their full potential.

Boyes is to be presented with his award at the 15th annual Volleyball Alberta Awards Banquet on Sat., June 23 at The Westin Hotel in Edmonton.
