Rimbey town council is looking at implementing a cat bylaw.

At its Tuesday meeting council discussed the possibility of implementing a cat bylaw with Jim Deboon of Animal Control Services and his daughter Mackenzie, a representative from Paws and Claws to discuss implementing a cat bylaw.

“This is the third time I’ve been in front of Rimbey for this topic,” said Jim DeBoom.” Thirty-two years ago no one had a cat bylaw,” he said, noting that presently only Rimbey and Delburne (in the central Alberta area) don’t have a bylaw.

DeBoom said he sees complaints about cars in Rimbey on a regular basis.

“A loose dog is an immediate threat. A loose cat is a nuisance,” added his daughter, Mackenzie.

Council discussed the cat bylaw issue at some length.

“To me we have to do a cat bylaw,” said Coun. Paul Payson. “And the sooner the better. We can’t leave it for another council.”

Council agreed to have animal control services look at the bylaw that is now in place by the town of Rimbey and admend it so that cats are included as well.

Council didn’t set a time frame on implementing a cat bylaw, but agreed the issue needs to be dealt with due to the number of concerns about stray cats running at large in the community.
