Rimbey town council will request Tagish Engineers to look at a solution regarding the road in front of the Rimbey Elementary School.

Council’s decision came on the heels of a delegation from the elementary school council who expressed concern about the stop signs and the cross walk at a council meeting, last Tuesday.

Jacey Smith, who spoke on behalf of the school council said her daughter was almost hit by a vehicle on that road and she would like to see some changes made to ensure the safety of the children.

“My biggest concern is that come winter you can’t see the crosswalk,” she said. “The situation is worse in bad weather.”

She said she had witnessed four vehicles “blowing right through” the stop sign. “Something needs to be done,” she told council.

Coun. Paul Payson suggested making the street a one-way would control traffic, but public works director Rick Schmidt said a one-way might not work due to residents who live on the street.

Schmidt said it’s “driver behavior” that is causing the problem. “Lights could go in and we would still have the same result,” he said.

Raised intersections were also discussed as a way to control traffic.

Counc. Gayle Rondeel wanted to know why so many parents are driving their children to school.

Council plan to meet with Tagish before school begins in September.
