Council wants road clarified

Businessman Stan Cummings was back at a town council meeting last week asking for answers about the 54th Street access to Highway 53.

Cummings, who owns Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel and several acres of land adjacent, has said he made an agreement with the former council in which he gave them about half an acre of land so 54th Street would be completed and access provided onto Highway 53.

Now Cummings want his land back if there is no access built to the highway.

“What I’d like to know is what progress has been made,” he said.

“What is happening with the access?”

However, council had no answer for Cummings, other than to tell him they are not responsible for completing the access as they have an agreement with Gord Davies from Cavalier Venture Corporation to complete the project.

Davies is to be reimbursed by the town per square metre for the project, is estimated to cost $230,000.

At the meeting, council passed a resolution authorizing administration to send a letter to Davies asking for clarification of his intent for the construction of the 54th Street access to Highway 53.

When contacted by The Review Aug. 24, Davies said he had been notified by the town by letter asking when he could schedule time to complete the road and the access.

Davies said he had not yet contacted the town, but planned to do so.

“They haven’t budgeted for it, and I haven’t got any money for it. I expect that it won’t be built until next year,” he said.

However, Davies agreed it is part of the development agreement made up in 2009. The agreement states the town will be responsible for the construction and paving of the 54th Street and Highway 53 access and the developer (Gord Davies of Cavalier) will complete the work.
