A baby boy born to Sander and Sara Spelt from Crestomere is Rimbey’s New Year’s baby.

Storm Diesel James Spelt made his appearance at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre at 12:50 p.m. on Jan. 3. He weighed six pounds, three ounces and measured 19.5 inches long.

While gently cradling her newborn son in her home near Crestomere, Sara Spelt said the baby was due on Dec. 28, but she hoped the child would be born before Christmas.

However, when little Storm did decide to come into this world, he didn’t waste much time.

Sara’s labour began at 5 a.m. She and her husband left for the 15-minute ride to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre at around 11 a.m.

“It was way quicker than with the other ones,” she said. “He was born in less than two hours after we got there.”

The birth of the new baby gives the Spelt family two boys and two girls, which the parents agree will be nice for everyone.

Storm is a brother to four-year-old Summer, two-year-old Skyla and one-year-old Steven.

Storm is not the first New Year’s baby to be born in her family, said Spelt, noting her cousin, Karie Smith was Breton’s New Year’s baby 36 years ago.
