Division 4 farmer runs for county council

Roland Grutterink is throwing his hat into the political ring as a candidate for Division 4 of Ponoka County.

Roland Grutterink is throwing his hat into the political ring as a candidate for Division 4 of Ponoka County.

The amiable farmer, who runs a cow/calf operation with 175 head, was born and raised in the county. He comes from a family that has lived, worked and breathed agriculture for generations, and is pleased to continue to be part of the rural Alberta lifestyle.

As a county councillor, he believes he could listen to his friends and neighbours, take their concerns to the table, and help make decisions which would benefit everyone.

Grutterink doesn’t see Ponoka County as having a lot of burning issues, although he admits the condition of roads seems to be a number one priority.

“The roads are a lot better than they used to be,’ he said. “They weren’t as good as they are now a few years ago.”

Grutterink doesn’t believe trucks from large farming operations are damaging county roads.

“I think more damage comes from commercial and custom operators. If there is problems, I think they needs to be dealt with on a per incident basis.

A strong supporter of meeting the needs of seniors, Grutterink is undecided about his position regarding Rimoka Housing and Bethany Group.

“I think we need to look after our own elderly. They have raised their families here, they have given a lot. They are the fabric of the community.

Grutterink said he has no agenda and no ax to grind, but simply wants to do his part, adding people living in the county simply want to know there is someone out there they can talk to if they do have a concern.

He believes he could be that person.

“I talk to people. I’m a good listener and I believe I am a fairly good communicator.”

Grutterink has been a director with the UFA for 15 years. He said the position has given him experience in leadership and communication.

“It has been a huge learning experience for me.”

Grutterink is married to Irene and the couple have four children; Dustin, Aya, Rico and Selena and one grandson, Beau.
