Drive Happiness, a satellite program with a head office out of Edmonton, has been patnering with a few FCSS organizations across Alberta, and has now landed in Rimbey.

The program is a seniors transportations program, also open to those with disability or on a needs basis.

“The cool thing about this is it runs seven days a week,” said Community Programs Coordinator with Rimbey FCSS Carmen Nixon.

Nixon said they have started recruiting volunteers for two months as they need to create that volunteer basis before they can start accepting clients.

As long as there are enough volunteers, they can launch the program in March.

Seniors will be able to buy a ticket from Drive Happiness and they have a ticket system at $10 a ticket, and they can buy multiple tickets.

“That $10 a ticket buys 90 minutes of driving or 40 kilometres and it’s not limited to appointments. If they want to go visit a friend, that’s fine.”

Seniors will be able to call Drive Happiness and volunteers can go right on their website to accept clients to drive and book tickets that way.

“This gives another option and a little bit of flexibility, and the nice thing is that the clients that purchase the tickets, they can have a travel companion, so if they need to bring their grandkid with them, that’s allowed,” said Nixon.

Those who volunteer are reimbursed at a flat rate of $8 per $10 in client tickets.

“Another really cool thing is their insurance at Drive Happiness covers the volunteer.”
