Fire crews extricated one person with serious injuries

A serious head-on collision closed both lanes of Highway 2A about five kms south of Ponoka.

The cause of the collision is not known, however, there were two vehicles involved, both with one driver and no passengers.

One of the vehicles was in the east side ditch where a woman driver was trapped. The other vehicle appeared to have relatively minor damage and it was stopped in the southbound lane a short distance away.

Attending the scene were EMS, the Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit and the Ponoka County East District Fire Department.

The driver of the vehicle in the ditch was trapped and firefighters had to extricate the driver and is was believed to have suffered serious injuries, although the extent of those injuries is not known.

Initially it’s believed STARS Air Ambulance was called to the scene, however, due to a low level fog in the area, the chopper was cancelled.

The Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit issued a press release stating that portion of Highway 2A was impassable and would be for some hours while the collision analyst investigated and crews cleared the scene.

The collision was so severe it ripped one of the vehicle’s wheels off.

More to come…
